How to Properly Fit your Horse's Breast Collar

One of the most important aspects of preparing your horse to ride is the proper placement and adjustment of the breast collar.  When the breast collar is not properly suited to your horse it can impede your horse's stride by causing resistance on the horse's shoulder and can also negatively effect the horse's air intake by pressing against the windpipe.

To help you avoid discomfort and pain to your horse, here are a few tips to ensure the fit is accurate and that your horse does not suffer.
  1. Saddle your horse as you normally would. Attach your breast collar to the girth. It will either clip to a small D-ring in the middle of the girth or the girth can be run through the loop at the end of the breast collar.
  2. Attach each side of the breast collar to the D-rings on either side of the front of your saddle. The breast collar should make a "T" shape across your horse's chest.
  3. Adjust the buckles on the breast collar so that it fits correctly. The breast collar should sit smoothly across your horse's shoulders and you should be able to easily slide your hand between the breast collar and the skin.  The center of the breast collar should rest well below the soft tissue of the throat to avoid cutting off the horse’s ability to breathe.  Movement should not be restricted in any way by the breast collar.

What is Barrel Racing?

Barrel racing is a rodeo event that has quickly become one of the most exciting events drawing crowds of all walks of life.  The contest itself is very fast paced race event in which a horse and rider attempt to complete a clover-leaf pattern around preset barrels for the fastest time.  This contest puts the rider and horse to the test to see just how well the endless hours of practice have paid off.

Barrel Racing might very well be the most challenging contest of horsemanship skills and has become just as popular (if not more) as bull riding.  The sport began among amateur cowgirls looking for some friendly competition, however, the sport has now turned into a multi-million dollar professional sport.

This sport is not for the weak or the lazy for that matter... the training and discipline is intense and requires dedication both physically and mentally from the rider and the horse. As a bystander, one might think the sport is rather simple, however, years of training is required to efficiently run the barrels with the precision needed to take home first place.  Despite the rigorous training, the thrill of the barrel racing event lures the trainers back for more!!
